Do as I say and not as I do... XD
It's simple. To work by the rules : Do exactly the opposite of what I did here ! :p

Start with the central illustration, then apply gold, then proceed with the border.

I did the whole way round but it works. I really didn't know where I was going.

Very nice. Out of curiosity, what brand of adhesive do you use for your gold leaf? I've been trying to use a Mona Lisa adhesive pen, and it isn't working out too well for my projects. 3:

For flat gilding, I use an oil based adhesive by Robertson. For raised, traditionnal medieval gesso I make.
Forget the mona lisa gizmo. If you want something cheap and good *although it doesn't withstand burnishing* get your hands on PVA glue *book binding glue* or its diluted version "Aquasize". Easy peasy !

Online would be good. John Neal book sellers in US have Ormoline which is excellent for flat gilding ! or cornelissen.com or even scribblers, both in the UK, for the robertson. :)
